Water and sediment quality surveys

BMT Oceanica is a leader in the design and implementation of water and sediment quality surveys.

Our team has particular experience in the design and interpretation of surveys specific to marine outfalls (including treated wastewater, brine and bitterns), ports and harboursdredging and port infrastructure development, and aquaculture operations.  Our services are complemented by an expert understanding of national and state government environmental quality guidelines, standards and trigger values.

BMT Oceanica works closely with a suite of accredited laboratories to offer the following services relevant to water and sediment quality surveys:

  • Water sampling and coordination of laboratory analyses (physical chemistry, nutrients, chlorophyll, phytoplankton, faecal bacteria)
  • Effluent contaminant surveys (nutrients, faecal bacteria, organic and inorganic contaminants, including heavy metals)
  • Direct toxicity assessment and ecotoxicological assays
  • Sediment analyses (particle size, nutrients, faecal bacteria, organic and inorganic contaminants, including heavy metals)
  • Design and interpretation of biological and oceanographic surveys
  • Extensive understanding of national (ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000)) and Western Australian EPA environmental protection criteria
  • Statistical power and cost-benefit analysis to inform survey designs
